APS Elastomers’ Zythane® TPUs for Automotive Dunnage Applications
Shipping finished products
requires dunnage that has superior flexibility and elastic memory to insure
parts arrive secure and intact. Physical properties, including good tear,
cut, and abrasion resistance, excellent hydrolytic stability and superb elastic
memory has rendered Zythane® 4045D and 4060D the ideal, cost-effective TPU
material for injection molded dunnage required for the safe shipment and
handling of automotive parts.
“In
the past few years, APS Elastomers has positioned itself in many aspects of
developing and supplying TPU material for automotive dunnage”, says Stephane
Morin, owner of APS Elastomers in Romulus, Michigan. Automotive dunnage
products include trays, totes, containers, racks, separator bars, flippers,
conveyor hooks, support brackets, and cushion bumpers.
Zythane TPU for Automotive Dunnage |
Available in natural or
colored pellets, Zythane® 4045D and 4060D are polyester-based TPUs with a Shore
Hardness ranging from 95A-62D. Due to its formulation, Zythane TPU allows
for faster processing and lower power requirements due to easier flowing
characteristic. “Our customers can expect higher production rates compared to
typical TPUs at similar hardness levels”, says Morin. Specifically formulated
for injection molding applications, these grades offer excellent abrasion
resistance and toughness, as well as good hydrolytic stability, oil, fuel and
solvent resistance.
In addition to dunnage,
other applications include shoe soles, ski and skate boot shells, caster
wheels, animal tags, good overmolded adhesion to certain EP (ex: PC, ABS,
PMMA), couplings, gaskets and seals, tool handles, industrial parts, mobile
phone cases, armrests, golf disks, and mining screens.
“Our Zythane® TPU
portfolio is the most versatile and cost-effective on the market”, adds Morin.

APS Elastomers Develops Proprietary TPU Polycaprolactone for Suspension and Drive Train Components
One of the world’s leaders
in the polyurethane casting industry specializing in suspension and drive train
components for automotive, light truck and off-road industries was looking for
a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) that could outlast and outperform the
competition. Collaborating with their customer, APS Elastomers developed
several proprietary TPE formulations with the proper mix of softness, strength,
and durability needed for rigorous off-road applications; supplying
polycaprolactone-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) grades with good
processability and compression set at elevated temperatures. With a Shore Hardness range of 80A – 64D, the
Zythane® 3000 polycaprolactone series of TPEs was formulated for each specific
application. “Our ability to custom compound enables us to meet or exceed our
customer’s expectations” says Stephane Morin, owner of APS Elastomers.
In addition to suspension
and drive train components, the Zythane® 3000-series has been expanded to meet
diverse demands of vigorous and high temperature industrial applications such
as heavy-duty engineering equipment and hydraulic systems where working conditions
range from -40⁰C to 130⁰C. Excellent wear resistance against oils, grease,
water and extreme temperatures make them ideal for high performance injection
molding of seals, gaskets, wheels and rollers. Available in pellet form for ultimate
performance and efficiency, the polycaprolactone range has been broadened to include
high flow and soft grades.

APS Elastomers Provides TPE Deagglomeration
Deagglomeration is a size-reduction process in which loosely adhered
plastic pellets are broken apart. For soft TPEs, agglomeration can
occur if the material is packed hot or if the pellets themselves are under
pressure due to the way it was packaged.
“Deagglomeration is a valuable service we offer to our customers to
ensure our pellets flow freely in our customers’ processes”, says Stephane
Morin, owner of APS Elastomers.
All soft TPE
material shipped from APS Elastomers warehouse in Romulus, Michigan is
inspected for agglomeration. To achieve proper particle dispersal, APS
Elastomers developed proprietary deagglomeration equipment; allowing resin to
dry, mix and separate evenly. “We strive
to offer the best quality TPEs - and this extends not only to performance, but
appearance as well”, adds Morin.
